Army of the Republic Book Cover

Stuart Archer Cohen's controversial new novel, The Army of the Republic, (St. Martin’s Press) is set in a near-future United States where economic collapse and a one-party "democracy" has spawned a violent backlash.

The book centers around Lando, a Seattle urban guerrilla devoted to violent resistance, Emily, a political organizer in Seattle, and James Sands, a billionaire and government crony. Critics have called the book "brilliant," "terrifying," and "treasonous."

His previous two novels, Invisible World and 17 Stone Angels, have been translated into 10 languages.

Reviews for The Army of the Republic

“… Cohen has captured an America, literarily and artistically, that parallels what the Ron Paul revolution captured politically just this year. An America that is awakening, an America that is a long time coming, and an America that defies the old ways of thinking about change and politics.

Cohen has written a solidly grounded book that, while gripping and entertaining, also appeals to a political vision and imagination that was articulated by the founding fathers, and deserves a hearing.”

Pentagon Whistleblower Karen Kwiatkowski, Ph.D: What to Read While the Junta Consolidates

” … insight into the paranoid mind … thrilling sequences where tech-savvy insurgents plot audacious attacks with a sophistication…”

USA Today

“Mr. Cohen writes with conviction…”

New York Times

“One of the first works of art with the courage to live up to our historical moment.  The Army of the Republic is brilliant, terrifying and much too close for comfort.”

–Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine and No Logo

“A white-knuckle thrill ride that goes from zero to 99 in the first paragraph and never slows down: Thomas Paine meets Rage Against the Machine.”

“Read it quick, while it’s still fiction.”

–David Maine, author of The Preservationist and Monster, 1959
